Corona 18 inch Razor Tooth Saw

Ah! Not only a saw, but the Corona 18 inch Razor Tooth Saw and My 14 Week DIY Project. Yes, a 14 week do it yourself project. Probably took that long because I am a blonde. One of those blondes that do it yourself DIY!!

Corona RS 7500 Razor Tooth Saw with D Handle, 18" Curved Blade

I bought the Corona RS 7500 Razor Tooth Saw with D Handle, 18" Curved Blade because I wanted to trim some of the bushes around my house. I didn’t realize that this hand saw would become my go-to tool for a fourteen week project I undertook in my backyard after I finished up with my initial trimming.

You see, In all my life, I can’t remember that I ever used such a tool. I think I surprised myself with how easy it was to cut those limbs.

THAT FOURTEEN WEEK PROJECT!

Across the back of my property are nine crepe myrtles. Years ago, in my townhouse front yard I had the most beautiful crepe myrtle. It had the prettiest pink blossoms that you could actually see. Those crepe myrtles in my backyard were over 50 feet high! I couldn’t see the blossoms if there were any. And, it wasn’t until after I had pruned the trees that I got to appreciate the changing of the leaves come Fall.

I was pretty sure that the previous owners never pruned those trees!

One day I decided I was going to cut those limbs … once I put my mind to a project, I will not stop! And, that’s a good thing, because this turned out to be quite the job!!

the changing of the leaves on crepe myrtle trees
The changing of the leaves! Thanks to my 14 DIY project!

The Corona RS 7500 Razor Tooth Saw with D Handle, 18" Curved Blade handled the job pretty well. Only one time did that saw slip off the limb and hit me in my right shin, causing quite an interesting jagged cut! You want to be careful to keep your hands, arms, and legs out of the way. That’s why I wouldn’t use a chainsaw … I’d be afraid that I’d seriously hurt myself. You really can’t hurt yourself too much with this kind of hand saw. In my case, I came inside, applied some pressure and then cleaned the wound, added a bandage and went to lie down for a bit. Then, I was outside working with that saw again!

I used that Corona saw to cut the limbs into about five feet sections and then piled them up in the backyard until Fridays. Every Thursday afternoon for the fourteen weeks, I would carry the cut limbs to my curb for the yard pickup. Over the course of those fourteen weeks, I impressed the living heck out of the yard pickup guys! More than once, they both told me that there was no way I did all that work.

THE BEST DEVELOPED FOREARM!

A benefit of using this type of saw is that you get the most toned biceps along with a well-developed forearm. I was just showing Nelson at Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym my forearm the other day. It’s been several months since I last used it to cut the trees, but I still have definition in my muscles.

P.S. I don’t guarantee that you will achieve the same toning that I did, but you will surprise yourself on how well you can trim your own trees; crepe myrtles or otherwise! Plus, you will get the yard pickup guys talking … along with the neighbors. I did have one of my neighbors come by to tell me that I was the hardest working gal on our street. Yeah, and I’m blonde too!! And, I am one of those #blondesthatDIY !! Hear, hear. Last, but not the least, I was the Official Squidoo Backyard Gardener Contributor … maybe you had heard?

THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING!

Do check out my photo gallery mosaic which gives you an overall view of the project. Just imagine, that these show a small part of the job. But, you should be able to see just how well that Corona hand saw worked. That’s a lot of bang for the buck, you know? Are you ready to tackle your own trees?

Photo gallery mosaic of my 14 week DIY project BOO-BOOS!

Disclosure: I felt it was equal time for the boo-boos I acquired whilst working this job. Let this be a lesson to you to be vigilant when working with DIY tools. You’re probably safer with non-electric and non-gas-powered tools. Hey, DO IT YOURSELF tools!!

Hey there DIY people! Have you ever taken on a project like this one? I mean with up to fifty foot limbs to cut by hand? You know, where there is a will … there is a way!

Redwood Trees True Giants

Redwood Trees : True Giants in the Earth. Giant trees discovered : the redwood trees of the earth! Let's celebrate the beauty of the majestic giant Redwood Trees!

redwood tree wall mural art poster
Redwood Trees, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Wall Mural

In the mid of the 19th century the American writer Bayard Taylor undertook the adventure to travel to the Sierra Nevada, Calaveras County. Taylor had a fancy for trees of all kinds and he dedicated this pilgrimage to the last ancient giants on earth, which he compared with the pyramids of Gizeh in importance for the North American continent.

The incredible dimensions of these wooden towers is overwhelming. Historic photographs, for example by Amasa Plummer Flaglor, a pioneer photographer of the West, show ten people sitting next to each other in a row in the big incision cut at the base into the gigantic Redwood tree trunk before felling.

The first white man who discovered the Redwood Tree giants of the West was most probably Augustus T. Dowd, who worked for the Union Water Company as a hunter around 1850. He later founded Hutchins' California Magazine and began to write books about his travels. His contemporaries did not believe him when he reported about the giant trees he had seen on a hunting trip. Only by pretending to have shot the biggest grizzly bear ever he could persuade others to follow him into the woods. Welcome to giant trees discovered -- the redwood trees of the earth :: True Giants in the Earth!

The Endangered Giants of Our Earth -- Redwood Tree Forests

Sad enough, soon after the discovery of these wonderful redwood trees, the commercial exploitation started and nowadays there are only a few percent of the original growths of redwood forests left on earth.

The first great human act was to cut the “Discovery tree just to prove that men can do that ! Five men worked 22 days to screw holes into the trunk as they did have suitable saws. Even though the giants base was perforated it would not fall because of the weight of more than one thousand tons and the upright position of the trunk. Only with the help of a storm the giant tree came down. Later the age of the tree was examined: The tree had seen than 2500 before it was cut. The stump, that had served as dancing floor, can still be visited at Calaveras Big Tree State Park.

The fate of another wonderful Redwood tree called “The mother of the forest” (according to Wikipedia) was not much better. Quite justified the initiators of this business lost their money and went into bankruptcy. From then on the press took up the matter and the slaughter of the “Mother of the forests” caused a first insight that man had to preserve the treasures of nature. Also these ancient trees were perceived as a natural heritage of the American nation.

Finally John Muir (according to Wikipedia), the founder of the Sierra Club, entered the stage and the whole process got a new dynamic. Muir was the driving force to establish those great national parks Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park at the end of the 19th century.

The struggle to save the old trees has not come to an end yet. Still activists like Julia Butterfly Hill (according to Wikipedia) fight for the trees, sometimes even putting their own lives at risk.

Bayard Taylor published his encounter with the giant Redwood Trees in his travel book "At home and abroad" under the title "The big trees of Calaveras" (page 176 ff.):

"Suddenly in front of us,
where the gloom was deepest,
I saw a huge something behind the other trees,
like the magnified shadow of one of them,
thrown upon a dark red cloud …

Not trees, surely!

– but yes,
by all the dryads,
those are trees!.."

Famous Giant Redwood Trees
Redwoods with record breaking dimensions!

The world’s tallest Redwood tree measures 378.1 feet in height as the news reported in 2006.

Other famous redwood trees are featured on Wikipedia as follows:

Redwood trees are well represented when it comes to record breaking dimensions of trees (according to Wikipedia). The tallest tree is a Redwood with almost 380 feet height, a redwood has position No.3 in terms of diameter with 29 feet, two redwood trees have the lead as to volume with well over 52000 and 42 000 cubic feet, and the third oldest tree is a Redwood with 3266 years of age.

Redwood Trees -- The Botanical Facts
Two different types of redwood trees.

In total three different tree species are commonly called Redwood.

1. Sequoiadendron giganteum – the Sierra Redwood on WIKI This species is part of the cupressaceae family. Have a close look at the leaves of the Sierra Redwood they look like small needles, which cover each other like roof tiles.

2. Sequoia sempervirens – the Coast Redwood on WIKI
This is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family (Cupressaceae). Coastal California and the southwest of Oregon within the United States are the natural biotop of these trees.
The leaves of this species look completely different from the Sequioadendron leaves. (Image on wikimedia)

3. Metaseqoia glyptostroboides – the Dawn Redwood on WIKI
This tree species cannot be confused with those two above. The look of the tree is completely different, also it grows under much different conditions. Coast Redwood, Sierra Redwood and Metasequoia form a subfamily Sequoioideae within the Cupressaceae.

What does it mean to bless others and ourselves? In this collection of O'Donohue's poetic prayers, the author of Beauty and Anam Cara focuses on bringing God's blessings into the liminal spaces in our lives: times of transition, grieving, change or preparation for the unknown.

Some of the blessings are for specific situations that are bread-and-butter staples of other prayer books, such as benedictions over births, weddings, new jobs or new homes. Others are unexpected and bravely dark, including a prayer for the loved ones left behind after a suicide, or for a parent after the death of a child. As light departs to let the earth be one with night, Silence deepens in the mind, and thoughts grow slow; The basket of twilight brims over with colors, he says of evening Vespers.

To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings closes with the Irish priest's personal-and often profound-musings on the act of blessing, drawing on Celtic spirituality and the wisdom of poets and philosophers.

blessings to you art
Are you in touch with your inner spiritual self? Are you sharing your blessings with others? Would you not agree that we live in a busy world that presents us with more than our share of life's challenges? Interacting on the internet can increase those challenges as we learn how to communicate effectively with others.

Sometimes we might step on someone's toes or cause another person angst. Trust me! To be on the receiving end is no fun. So, stop and think for a moment today. Reach out and tell someone that you really care. Don't assume.

Blessings to YOU my dear! I first coined that phrase in early 2008 when I was a Squid Angel, for my first of three terms, on the platform of Squidoo. It's become a phrase that I've used frequently since then. We can all use some blessings in our daily life, you know?

Stop! Take a moment out of your busy day to reach out to a friend to let them know YOU care! Blessings to YOU my dear!

I'll bet YOUR Mom has her Momerisms

Well, it was just another Wednesday and I opened up my email to find over 100 emails — 5 of them from Mom alone. Each and every one of them was about something funny. My mom has become notorious for her momerisms throughout the years. You see, I think she has a terrific sense of humor and can tell a really good story. She’s a bit of a storyteller — I didn’t inherit the verbal storytelling abilities from her. I did inherit the ability to write though!

As I was browsing her emails, I noted that these were pretty funny — and thought I’d create a lens to honor my mom and her momerisms!

Update: This just in from Mom — Today is International Disturbed People’s Day! Please send an encouraging message to a disturbed friend… just as I’ve done. Oh, thanks Mom! I needed that.

I was just reading that Susan Gunelius wrote a blog post about this very lens topic. It seems that Dunkin' Donuts sponsored the research study through A&G Research to return the conclusion that more "hard working Americans" prefer Dunkin' Donuts coffee over Starbucks. Well, you don't get any more 'hard working' than JaguarJulie. And, JaguarJulie thinks Starbucks has the best coffee.

My ex-hubby was always telling me that Dunkin' Donuts is the Starbucks of the Northeast. I don't know about that as I haven't visited the Northeast lately ... how about you? Starbucks OR Dunkin' Donuts?

So you want a good cup of coffee or a donut? For me, it's a good cup of coffee and it's 5 STARS for Starbucks!

Why Coffee?

Especially these two well-known brands?

cat drinking out of starbucks coffee mug
Would you believe that I started drinking coffee when I was about ten years old? At that time, there weren’t any Starbucks coffee shops. And, it was usually just a good old cup of java – nothing fancy except do you want it black or with cream and sugar.

I’ve also drunk my java with a little cream and some popular sweetener, not sugar. It seemed that was the only way I could start my day – and normally, I went for the stronger brews.

In the beginning, I remember Maxwell House, Folgers, and Chase & Sanborn. Sometimes, grandma would serve the instant which never tasted right. Other times, she had the old electric percolator brewing.

The first time I had a cup of Starbucks coffee I thought it was interesting tasting and rather strong. Later, in my coffee drinking life, I learned to compare other coffees to that taste. In the end, I found Dunkin’ Donuts was a bit too mild for my tastebuds. I always kept coming back to Starbucks.

How about you?

Right vs Left Debate

Right vs. Left Debate : Which Wing Side are You? It is an on-going political debate of right vs left! Right vs Left! Which side are you on? It is the time-honored question of Right vs. Left. That is often known as right-wing vs. left-wing ...

In politics, left-wing refers to those who prioritize equality as a political end, in opposition to the right-wing who view this end as a threat to civil society liberties and/or the continuance of inherited traditions.

A right-winger tends to be more conservative while a left-winger tends towards the liberal. Which side are you on? Right or Left? Are your political and life views leaning more to the right or do they lean more to the left? Do you have a right or a left view?

It is an on-going debate pitting Right vs Left! Personally, I am the type of person who is striving for socially and politically correctness.

I am seriously just trying to be on the RIGHT side of all that social media stuff. You know, minding my Ps and Qs and showing proper etiquette across the board. That's right to me; don't want to be left out.

Harley vs Honda Motorcycles

Harley vs. Honda Battle of the vroooms! Debate me: Harley vs Honda please! Welcome to the great debate of Harley vs. Honda ... it is seriously the Battle of the vrooms! Gentlemen, please start your engines. Vroom Vroom Folks! Let's start those engines, shall we.

The battle of the vroom-vrooms or motorcycle sounds has raged for years and years! But, having been a Harley-Davidson 'back-seat rider' for many years, there is no comparison to other imitator motorcycles and their 'sounds.' Harley vs. Honda -- which has the better sound; which is the better bike; which is YOUR choice for the best motorcycle?

You know, recently I met the lady that spearheaded the Chrome Divas organization in Jacksonville Beach. We talked about motorcycles for women drivers, and she gave me some tips on which bikes to check out. Was one of them a Harley or not?

Didn't Harley ctually PATENT their sound? Well, I've ridden on a few Sportsters and a Fat Boy, plus attended Daytona's bike week numerous times ...

Let me tell you, there ain't nuthing compared to a sound of a Harley! Vroom ... Vroom! Let's get it started in here. Beep! Beep! And, move over!!! HARLEY vs. HONDA -- Battle of the VROOMS!

Hello Rider Readers!

harley davidson leather vest

We've got a simple question for you!

What have you ridden?
  1. I only ride Harleys!
  2. I only ride Hondas.
  3. I will ride whatever motorcycle I can get my hands on.
  4. I don't ride motorcycles.

Vroomage says:
Both have their pluses and minuses.
Harleys are fine bikes in their own right, but Honda is great in its own right too. I would say that HD makes a meaner sounding machine that is iconic of classic America, however they are pricey and the accessories are quite high as well, but those accessories are also readily available.

Honda cannot compete in terms of sound, however, in terms of a smooth ride and overall reliability (shaft driven, excellent record of long lasting rides, etc) Honda would be my personal pick.

I wouldn't turn down a free HD, no doubt, but if I have to pay for a machine, I would rather take a smoother ride from a company with a better track record in regards to reliability.

HD has gotten a lot better since the 70's though (in terms of reliability) but old reputations last a long time you know. Some will say that you never see a 1950's Honda motorcycle on the road, but the company didn't even start releasing their motorcycle line in the USA until 1966, just keep that in mind.

Honda Harley Deal?

This goes to prove my point that HARLEY is indeed a better motorcyle than HONDA. And, what’s that they say? If you can’t BEAT ‘em, BUY ‘em?

Honda-Harley deal, a dead-end – Posted on June 25, 2007
On Friday, rumors were circulating that Honda Motor Co. reportedly was eyeing American classic Harley-Davidson. However, the Japanese automaker denied the talk. Nonetheless, the rabble-rousing happened to drive up Harley shares $3, closing the week at $62.55.

But a Honda-Harley deal makes little sense for Honda, and not just because Harley has a $16 billion market cap. As BloggingStocks points out, Harley customers are fiercely nationalistic, so if it fell in to the hands of Honda, most Harley riders would go elsewhere for new bikes.

So if Honda’s looking for a deal, its money would be better spent on Jaguar and Land Rover, which Ford Motor Co. may sell. –Matthew Wurtzel.

Best Roadsters Ever

Suffering from a mid-life crisis or whatever? Roadster! I've owned a couple of roadsters in my life. There was a red Mazda Miata ... then the yellow M-B SLK-230 ... and finally a blue Chrysler Crossfire. So, vroom vroom ... I am a roadster-authority! Most of the cars that I've owned in my adult life have been two-seater sports cars!

2006 blue chrysler crossfire convertible roadster
Do you know that I recently traded in my 1999 sunburst yellow Mercedes-Benz SLK-230 Kompressor roadster? Yep! I drove that beautiful car for just short of 10 years.

My ex-hubby was always BEGGING me and PLEADING with me to let him have MY roadster to drive. But, I resisted -- you see, I like to park my baby in the boonies and walk -- he likes to cram the car into the tiniest parking spaces and then look for DINGS. Well, we are now divorced, you know? Oh, and I have debated what that next car of mine might be. So, I've been looking around at the best roadsters ever for actually several years. I was trying to find my next dream car.

Drum roll ... In August 2011 I took the leap and traded in my SLK-230 on a 2006 Chrysler Crossfire -- convertible roadster. No, it is not yellow, but it is a pretty blue -- SEE!!! I'm telling you that I suffered through a terrible case of separation anxiety in giving up my baby. I had pampered that SLK-230 and kept the mileage low at 58,600 miles. Now, I do seriously hope that somebody else is taking GOOD care of my former baby.

There seems to be a good variety of roadsters.Vroom vroom ... ladies and gentlemen ... start your engines ... the best roadsters ever!

I love the roadster as it's a great little car for anyone suffering from a mid-life crisis or whatever! Welcome to the Best Roadsters Ever. Vroom Vroom!

Editors' Most Wanted Vehicles for 2007: Edmunds Roadster Convertible Under $60,000
Winner: 2007 Porsche Boxster.
Now in its 10th year, the entry-level midengine Porsche still delights. With its 245-horsepower flat-6 engine, nearly perfect weight distribution and those legendary Porsche brakes, the Boxster carves up canyons like nothing else on the road. Fit and finish is typical Porsche solid, the power top goes up and down quickly and easily, and the usual leather seats and Bose stereo system make it feel great even when you’re not running through the canyons. If that’s not enough, the upmarket Boxster S offers a higher-output version of the same flat-6 with 295 hp and 251 pound-feet of torque. Add in the slick-shifting six-speed and there’s not much more you could ask from a convertible.

Honorable Mention: 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class.
Mercedes’ little boulevard cruiser doesn’t get the respect it deserves. It may look like a Sunday cruiser, but start throwing it around some turns and it’ll impress you with its performance. Go for the 3.5-liter V6 and you get more than just 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, you get one of the best sounding six-cylinder on the market. If that’s not enough, there’s always the 355-hp AMG version. Regardless of which engine you choose, all SLKs have a retractable hardtop that turns the diminutive coupe into a full-blown convertible at the touch of a button. And of course, all models feature plenty of safety features and luxury appointments, including a nine-speaker CD stereo. While problematic sight lines keep it from the brass ring, the SLK-Class is still a great choice in the stylish two-seat roadster class. –Edmunds.com.

Consumers' Most Wanted Vehicles for 2007: Edmunds Roadster Convertibles

Convertible Under $25,000: Saturn Sky.
Saturn boldly dropped its top and went speeding off in a new direction this year with the launch of its first-ever convertible, the Sky. The people have spoken and they clearly think Saturn’s turn was a wise one: The sleek-looking Saturn Sky soaked up the sunshine in the No. 1 spot, with 34 percent of the votes. A perennial favorite, the Mazda MX-5 Miata trailed in 2nd place with a 30 percent showing, while last year’s surprise winner, the Pontiac Solstice, had to settle for 3rd place, with 19 percent of the votes. The Mini Cooper convertible was next with 13 percent, followed by the Volkswagen New Beetle (2 percent) and the Chrysler PT Cruiser (2 percent).

Convertible Under $35,000: Honda S2000.
A year ago the Honda S2000 lost by a bumper to the BMW Z4, after claiming the cup in this segment the previous two years. Honda’s high-revving drop top got its groove back for 2007, scoring a win with a 30 percent showing. Lurking in the S2000′s rearview mirror was a familiar name, the Ford Mustang, which rode the wave of the 500-hp Shelby GT500 version to get a respectable 27 percent of the love. Twenty-one percent of the voters picked the Pontiac G6 and its retractable hardtop, while another hardtop convertible, the Volkswagen Eos (12 percent), struggled to play catch-up, along with the Toyota Camry Solara (5 percent) and Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (3 percent).

Convertible Under $45,000: BMW Z4.
Behold the juggernaut that is the BMW Z4. Its hard-edged beauty and commanding performance made it a winner in the “Convertible Under $35,000″ category last year. A slight price increase placed it in a loftier class of competitors on this go-round, but these new challengers were not mighty enough to topple this conquering Teuton, which claimed the top spot with a 20 percent showing. The solid credentials of the Saab 9-3 were enough to take the silver (19 percent), and the Swede was followed by the feisty Lotus Elise and elegant Audi A4 (both at 18 percent). The tail end of the caboose consisted of the Nissan 350Z roadster (15 percent) and the Volvo C70 four-place hardtop (9 percent).

Convertible Under $60,000: Chevrolet Corvette.
Value may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you consider the 400-hp Chevrolet Corvette, but that’s exactly what this classic roadster promises to bring to your garage. Chevy’s singular drop top offers iconic good looks and world-class performance, all for a surprisingly affordable price. It’s little wonder, then, that the Corvette was miles ahead of the competition in this race, with a staggering 50 percent of the vote. Porsche’s graceful Boxster was a mere silhouette on the horizon with a distant 2nd-place finish with 20 percent, and it was followed closely by the redesigned BMW 3 Series, now a hardtop convertible at 17 percent. The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class (9 percent) and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class (5 percent) brought up the rear.

Convertible Over $60,000: Cadillac XLR.
In an upset of World Series’ proportions, Cadillac’s XLR, with its chiseled styling and retractable hardtop, took the win in the top-end convertible category. With 29 percent of the votes, the Caddy clipped the Porsche 911 (25 percent) and soundly trounced another pair of highly qualified drop tops, the athletic BMW 6 Series four-seater (including the M6) and the always elegant Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, which earned 14 percent each. The Jaguar XK (11 percent) and Lexus SC 430 (6 percent) weren’t even in the XLR’s rearview mirror. –Edmunds.com.

Quick, tight, and heaven on curves, the roadster provides a driving experience unlike any other. Car buffs will simply devour this tantalizing and unique history of top-down two-seaters, featuring a garage-full of nimble sports cars; automobiles born to go flat-out fast at Le Mans; and seemingly sedate sedans that secretly possess the souls of race cars.

More than 100 photos show off these beautiful classics, capturing the physical sensations of being in an open car, on the open road. British beauties, including the MG, Triumph, and the eternally glamorous Morgan. The sleek Alfa Romeos and Bugattis have the smooth, swift Continental style; these were built for speed, not comfort. DPT Vaccine

DPT Vaccine : What is it; is it Safe? Do you know what the DPT vaccine includes and whether it is really safe? We want the truth! The DPT vaccine is a mixture of three vaccines: to immunize against diphtheria, pertussis [whooping cough] and tetanus. It also comes with its risks of adverse reactions, although it has been "reported" that severe problems closely following DPT immunization happen very rarely.

If you were to ask my mother about the DPT Vaccine of the early 1950s, she may tell you a different story about how safe it WAS back in the 1950s. I had an older brother but he is no longer with us! I created this page in remembrance of my older brother who I sure wish I had the opportunity to get to know before he passed away. I want to think that he is an angel in Heaven looking down upon us and our family, and particularly smiling at my mom.

You know, this particular lens has been a challenge for me and my mom. I wanted to be considerate of the pain she has gone through, over the years, since losing her firstborn. She doesn't like to talk about it much. The DPT vaccine is a sore point for my mom. I don't believe she has ever stopped to visit this personal page of mine because of her bad memories.

Do you know what the DPT vaccine includes and whether it is really safe? Yes, no ... maybe??? I think we all just want to know the risks and be able to make an informed decision about what is safe for ourselves and for our children. That's all.

The DPT Vaccine Poll
Please take a moment to answer our question. What type of experiences have you had with the DPT vaccine?
  1. I personally had an adverse effect to the DPT vaccine.
  2. Somebody in my family had an adverse effect to the DPT vaccine.
  3. I know of someone who had an adverse effect to the DPT vaccine.
  4. Only positive experiences with the DPT vaccine.
  5. Not sure.

My Brother Bruce Alan - RIP

my brother bruce alan photo mosaic

You see, I had an older brother who received the DPT Vaccine as directed, however, he was one of those reportedly "rare cases" of the severest of adverse reactions requiring hospitalization for high fever and uncontrollable seizures. He quickly became a "test subject" for the Cleveland Clinic. Unfortunately, there was not much that could be done for him. He died shortly after his fourth birthday! I wish that he was with us today; however, because he received the DPT vaccine and had severe reactions to it, he is not with us. See the picture to the right? That is a baby picture of my brother.

What is the DPT Vaccine?
First hand experience with the DPT vaccine!

DPT, (sometimes DTP) is a mixture of three vaccines, to immunize against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus.

DTP vaccine may be distinguished as “DTwP” and “DTaP”, with “wP” referring to “whole cell pertussis” and “aP” referring to “acellular pertussis”. (The acellular form is considered safer and contains far fewer antigens than the older preparation.) Current versions of DTP in Europe do not contain preservatives; older ones contained Thiomersal. In the Netherlands, DTP refers to a mixture of diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis vaccines.wikipedia.com.

What is Diphtheria?

Diphtheria (Greek (diphthera) – “pair of leather scrolls”), is an upper respiratory tract illness characterized by sore throat, low fever, and an adherent membrane (a pseudomembrane) on the tonsils, pharynx, and/or nasal cavity. A milder form of diphtheria can be restricted to the skin. It is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, a facultatively anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium.

Diphtheria is a highly contagious disease spread by direct physical contact or breathing the aerosolized secretions of infected individuals. Once quite common, diphtheria has largely been eradicated in developed nations through wide-spread vaccination. In the United States for instance, between 1980 and 2004 there have been 57 reported cases of diphtheria (and only five cases since 2000 as the DPT (Diphtheria-Pertussis-Tetanus) vaccine is given to all school children. Boosters of the vaccine are recommended for adults since the benefits of the vaccine decrease with age; they are particularly recommended for those traveling to areas where the disease has not been eradicated. Learn more about Diphtheria at wikipedia.com.

What is Pertussis?
Also known as Whooping Cough

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, a highly contagious disease caused by the bacterium, Bordetella pertussis; it derived its name from a characteristic severe hacking cough followed by intake of breath that sounds like ‘whoop’; a similar, milder disease is caused by B. parapertussis. Although many medical sources describe the whoop as “high-pitched,” this is generally the case with infected babies and children only, not adults.

Worldwide, there are 30-50 million pertussis cases and about 300,000 deaths per year. Despite generally high coverage with the DTP and DTaP vaccines, pertussis is one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths world-wide. Most deaths occur in young infants who are either unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated; three doses of the vaccine are necessary for complete protection against pertussis. Learn more about Pertussis at wikipedia.com.

What is Tetanus?
Commonly referred to as Lockjaw

Tetanus is a medical condition that is characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fibers. The primary symptoms are caused by tetanospasmin, a neurotoxin produced by the Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium tetani.

Infection generally occurs through wound contamination, and often involves a cut or deep puncture wound. As the infection progresses, muscle spasms in the jaw develop hence the common name, lockjaw. This is followed by difficulty swallowing and general muscle stiffness and spasms in other parts of the body. Infection can be prevented by proper immunization and by post-exposure prophylaxis. –Learn more about Tetanus at wikipedia.com

Report on the first symptoms of neurological damage

In 1994, the Institute of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences published a report stating that if the first symptoms of neurological damage occurred within the first seven days following vaccination with whole-cell pertussis vaccine, the evidence was compatible with the possibility that it could be the cause of permanent brain damage in otherwise apparently healthy children. It continued by stating:

This serious acute neurologic response to DPT is a rare event. The estimated excess risk ranged from 0 to 10.5 per million immunizations (IOM, 1991). The committee stresses that this is not the strongest statement regarding causality; the evidence does not “establish” or “prove” a causal relation….

The evidence remains insufficient to indicate the presence or absence of a causal relation between DPT and chronic nervous system dysfunction under any other circumstances. That is, because the NCES is the only systematic study of chronic nervous system dysfunctions after DPT, the committee can only comment on the causal relation between DPT and those chronic nervous system dysfunctions under the conditions studied by the NCES. In particular, it should be noted that the chronic nervous system dysfunctions associated with DPT followed a serious acute neurologic illness that occurred in children within 7 days after receiving DPT.

Severe problems with DPT?

Severe problems closely following DPT immunization happen very rarely. These include a serious allergic reaction, prolonged seizures, a decrease in consciousness, lasting brain disease, or even death.

Our Last Summer Together!
July 1953, Cleveland, Ohio

jaguarjulie and brother bruce alan july 1953
The significance of this picture? It is from the Summer of 1953 as I rode my little tricycle with my brother Bruce Alan. We lived on the Westside of Cleveland, Ohio in a little brick bungalow on Dennison Avenue.

You know, I don’t really have any memories of this time together with my brother. If you look closely at the picture, you see that I look much healthier than my brother who was 18 months older than me.

It is personally very sad to think that I never got to know my older brother. You saw the baby pictures of the beautiful baby boy?

This was our last Summer together.

Only .0007%?
Such severe neurologic events occur after approximately 1 in 140,000 doses of the DPT vaccine (0.0007%). Most of the reactions to DPT injection are thought to be from the pertussis component.

Our Last Fall Together!
Autumn, 1953, Cleveland, Ohio

jaguarjulie and brother bruce alan autumn 1953

What a sweet picture of me and my brother Bruce Alan. I’m not sure if mom or dad put us in that little wagon, but it sure made for a great photo opportunity.

I think this is one of my favorite pictures of me with my brother. It surely is the last Fall we spent together in Cleveland, Ohio. Such were the days in the early 50s, with not much of a care in the world. Well, except if you didn’t have your health.

I really wonder, what kind of experiences I could have had with my brother if he had survived his crisis all those years ago.

The P in the DPT Vaccine may be hazardous to your child's health.

Swinging with My Brother!

Autumn, 1953, Cleveland, Ohio

jaguarjulie and brother bruce alan autumn 1953
This is probably my second favorite photo of me with my late brother Bruce Alan. In the previous photo, you could see the two of us in that wagon. In the background, was this swing.

I’m thinking we enjoyed a lot of time in our backyard on the Westside of Cleveland either in that wagon or on this swing! But, we needed mom and/or dad to help us out.

Push us, please … mom! Higher … higher!

P.S. I miss you Bruce!

Our Last Christmas Together!
December 1953, Cleveland, Ohio

jaguarjulie and brother bruce alan christmas december 1953

What is the significance of this picture? Well, it is the last Christmas that Bruce Alan spent with us! As I was going through my photo album preparing to scan a few memories of my brother, I came upon this picture.

I think this must have been a Polaroid that my dad took of us kids sitting around our Christmas tree in Cleveland, Ohio. We lived near Kamm’s Corner not far from the Cleveland Hopkins Airport.

In the picture, left to right, Bruce Alan, my sister Diane and me!!

RIP Bruce Alan : March 5, 1954

rip bruce alan march 5 1954

This is the actual “holy card” that I had in my photo album that commemorates the passing of my brother Bruce Alan. In Loving Memory of his beautiful short life.

He was just 4 years old [and almost 2 months] when he passed away on March 5, 1954.

The significance of this image? This is a “holy card” that I received from my grandmother Julia Nagy.

That is my handwriting as a young child. In Catholic School, we took penmanship and my handwriting improved.

What’s also interesting is that this “holy card” was printed in Italy! Gosh, I wonder if a lot of those cards are still printed in Italy.

Of course, that was a lot of years ago!

RIP Bruce
