Comfort Foods Contributor

I was the official Comfort Foods Contributor on Squidoo. From a very early age, as I was growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, I learned to have a fine appreciation for Hungarian Foods from my maternal grandmother, Julia Nagy.

Holidays with Grandma Julia Nagy - JaguarJulie and sister Diane

It was an incredible experience as a young child to visit my grandparents because grandma was always making something that smelled and tasted quite heavenly!

"Are we going to grandma's house for the holiday?" I would ask my mom. "Yes, we are ... and she is making her stuffed cabbage rolls." Oh my, but that was all I needed to hear. Just a wee part of the comforting childhood memories that come back to me today as I think about what grandma's special recipes really meant. Come along, visit with me as I think about all those foody memories. Comfort-ing childhood memories!

I've always written about those comfort foods in my life, not only as the official contributor on Squidoo! Can you smell it now?

Poll : Childhood Memories and Comfort Foods
How about you? Do you have these kind of memories like I do?
  1. Yes indeed I do!
  2. No, I wished I did!

Thank YOU Grandma!

Oh, it is Mother's Day as I sit here and write this ... How appropriate that I waited for one week after Bonnie asked me if I would like to take on the role of the official Comfort Foods Contributor on Squidoo!

You see, she also asked me to be the official Backyard Gardener Contributor on Squidoo. I created my official page right away on May 5th. However, writing about comfort foods was just a little more special.

Hey, this is me right here in this red sparkly gown all dressed up for the holidays and looking like a glamour girl. It goes without saying that I wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for my grandmother and my mother; right? And, I also owe my looks to them both … and of course, my father.

I am more than grateful to grandma for giving me such rich memories of my childhood. It is true that her one special recipe that defined those times was her Hungarian stuffed cabbage rolls.

Today, IT is the top of the list for me if you ask me what are my favorite comfort foods. After that, I really can’t rank the rest of them in the top ten … pretty much, I think of the rest as equal favorites.

I Have this Hungarian Recipe Book!

June Meyer's Authentic Hungarian Heirloom Recipes!
My edition is the spiral-bound copy. I have had this book for a lot of years! For me, it is the first of many Hungarian recipe books that I will recommend. I love the extra cultural information that you get ... it's like a story behind the food! Plus, the recipes surely sound like my grandma Julia Nagy was the food consultant behind this book. Those sound like my grandma's authentic Hungarian recipes!!!

You get 95 authentic recipes. These are "pre World War One family recipes from the Austro-Hungarian Empire!"

Much like in our family, these family recipes were never written down, but were passed down through the family. I'm glad THEY finally wrote them down and offered them up in this little book.

An extra plus is learning of their family's life in the Altkeer, Batchka region of Hungary around the 1900s!

Where IT all Started!
By my grandma's side all those years ago ...

jaguarjulie and grandma julia nagy comfort foods contributor
You’ve probably seen this picture many a time throughout my food memoirs! This is the one picture that comes to mind when I think back on comfort foods and experiencing time with my grandma, Julia Nagy back in the 1950s. It was a less harried time back then with no computers or cell phones … but real time with the family.

I am standing by my grandma at the kitchen dining table and she is writing something down with a pencil. It could have been a recipe, you know?

If you look closely at the photo, you can see the fine bone china on the table. To the left of the photo, you get a glimpse of my mom who also is writing with a pencil.

This is an old black and white polaroid that my dad took. We are in my grandparents brick bungalow on Chatfield Avenue on the Westside of Cleveland. Speaking of old things, how about that rotary telephone and that old General Electric refrigerator?

Thankfully, we had an electric refrigerator that kept all those comfort food leftovers fresh for our next meal of memories.

The MAIN Influence!
It all revolves around the rolls - the authentic Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls! OMG, but who would have thunk? All those years ago, my favorite childhood food created all those memories that define me today. It is such a comfort you know?

Easter at Grandma's House
Another old polaroid ...

aguarjulie comfort foods contributor easter memories
Talk about polaroid memories! Take a look at this picture … you saw a bit of it in our introduction. This was taken at Easter with our family get-together down the basement of my grandma’s house on Chatfield Avenue.

That is me on the right hamming it up for the camera as I shovel — probably stuffed cabbage rolls — into my mouth! You can see my sister Diane to the left and that’s probably my brother Paul’s head in the foreground. The “kids” got the card table whilst the adults sat together. In the background, if you look closely, you can see my grandma in the middle back holding one of my cousins.

I can make out a chocolate Easter bunny in a package on the table along with three bottles of Pepsi-Cola!

Traditional Hungarian Pastries for the Holidays
Equal time for the desserts! I can honestly say, that grandma's pastries were ranked right up there with the main entree! Those delicious nut rolls and poppy seed rolls. Yes, you can define desserts as comfort foods. We would usually be lucky enough to have grandma make BOTH of these for the holidays!!

Equal Time for my Other Grandma!
On the Westside of Cleveland ...

Thinking back all those years ago, my father’s mother, was an important influence. However, because she really didn’t speak very good English, I don’t have the same type of memories as I did with my mom’s mother!

My fraternal grandmother, Antonia Lesteshen, was a short, quiet woman … and I remember even less about my fraternal grandfather, Joseph Lesteshen. Today, I wished it was different.

You know, it kind of makes me smile as I am reliving my memories of her comfort foods. You see, she did make HER version of stuffed cabbage rolls for us kids … but something was WRONG with them. I’m hoping that I asked my mother quietly, “what the heck is that in those rolls?” She used buckwheat … not something a kid really likes especially after the other grandma has made her recipe!

But, my Ukrainian grandma did make very special breads! Her recipe was an egg bread that had a really dark crust, plus it didn’t look like a normal bread loaf … it was rather round.

When it was Easter, this grandma showed us her artistic side with the most artistic colored Easter eggs!

More of My Comfort Foods
I've written about so many tasty items! Honestly? How can you really rank these? I think they are all good. Just sharing a few of the other culinary items which have filled my stomach with comforting calories over the years. I'm thinking about Hungarian Goulash, Hungarian Spaetzle, Meatloaf and Chili for starts!

Picnic Memories with the Family
Celebrating the less formal times ...

jaguarjulie comfort foods contributor picnic
Ah, we weren’t always all dressed up and sitting around a formal dining table for the holidays! Some of my favorite memories with the casual picnics we enjoyed in the various parks throughout the Cleveland, Ohio area.

I am sitting at the picnic table looking rather cheeky, on the right, with my sister Diane, on the left. Unfortunately, our dad had his head cut-off … in the picture when my parents got a divorce. That’s a shame that mom did that to the photos!

Yummy Salad Recipes great for Picnics!
It's difficult to pick just one over the other These are two of my all-time favorites when talking salad recipes. And, then the third is something rather new! Perfect for picnics or family get-togethers. Let see, Eight Layer Salad, Spicy Potato Salad and then Breaded Baked Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs Salad!!

Picnic Memories with the Family Take Two
Hey, you about done yet?

jaguarjulie comfort foods contributor picnic
I guess my mom wanted to be sure she got a good picture of us … so she snapped another photo. I see I couldn’t wait and stuck my hand into the plate of food. As kids, we went for less formal comfort foods for our picnic.

We might have hot dogs or hamburgers on the grill. If mom packed a picnic lunch, she might also have meatloaf sandwiches and potato salad with some potato chips. We didn’t really do french fries since those usually went into the oven and were not as good and greasy as they are today!

P.S. Poor ol’ dad … still missing his head!

Some Great Sandwiches for Picnics
Make time to gather the family and go someplace!Sometimes you don't want to use the barbecue grill, but want to bring along ready-made healthy sandwiches. May I suggest one of these to comfort you: Grilled Cheese Sandwich on Jalapeno Cheese Bread, PST on Jalapeno Cheese Bread, PST on Onion Schnecken Roll.

Holidays at Grandma's with Kereszmama
My mom's Hungarian godmother!

jaguarjulie comfort foods contributor kereszmama
We knew it would be a special holiday at grandma’s when my mom’s Hungarian godmother, her kereszmama, would be there. Her daughter, Betty, was my kereszmama and I took her name of Elizabeth as my confirmation name. Gosh, I don’t remember my mom’s godmother cooking but I am sure she did consult or help my grandma when she was making her recipes.

I am thankful that I had this opportunity to reflect back on a quieter time that inspired me to be what I am today! Plus, to have actually experienced such tasty food recipes that would influence me and my writings so many years later.

That is comforting, you must admit!

Two More Traditional Hungarian Pastries
I know my mom's Hungarian godmother could make these! You know, now that I think about it, I know that my grandma used to talk about her flaky dough. I seem to remember a time that grandma talked with my mom's kereszmama about not being happy with her strudel dough. It seemed grandma couldn't get it flaky enough! So, I've hidden that recipe from my repertoire! But I have shared her Hungarian Butter Horns and Hungarian Kifli. LOL

Credits Due: To my Grandmother and Grandfather!
In closing, I need to pay credit where credit is due ... to my maternal grandparents ... Julia Nagy and Alexander Nagy. I have honored the both of them with their fifteen minutes of Squidoo fame. Without them, I don't know where the heck I would be today. Seriously.

Squid Angel

Squid Angel : Blessings to YOU! What it meant to be a Squidoo Squid Angel : Blessings to YOU, my dear! Ah, angels! There are heavenly angels. And, now there are Squidoo SquidAngels ... down to earth angels. This is the first instance on Squidoo that I have actually written about my Catholic upbringing in Cleveland, Ohio, and what an impact it had on my spiritual being. You see, it was the nuns and priests that I encountered in elementary and grade school who instilled in me strong Christian beliefs, particularly in Heaven and in Angels! Yes I believe in Heaven and I believe in Angels! It is just part of leading a Spiritual Life, you know?

jaguarjulie squid angel on squidoo
Then, after my grandparents all passed on it was in Lily Dale, a spiritualist community in Chautauqua County, NY that I had my first spiritual reading. At that time, I was told that there were auras around me of two women; i.e. my grandmothers. They were likened to my particular guardian angels.

Since my early days of schooling to today, I have had a deep spiritual appreciation for angels. I was once again honored to be an active Squid Angel, flapping my heavenly angel wings from October 13, 2009 to January 3, 2010. I was a SquidAngel Emeritus of two separate terms totaling 8.3 months, until I returned to active squid angel duty on March 5, 2012. My first term at Squid Angeling was a double-header, two terms rolled into one, lasting for nearly 6 straight months. It is really something to see how many lensmasters have actually participated in the SquidAngel program at Squidoo. And, how many lensmasters now actually believe in angels too!

You know, being a Squidoo Squid Angel has been a very meaningful and remarkable experience for me -- something I have taken most seriously. An angel in the true spirit and meaning of the word angel. I have opted to serve again as a Squidoo Squid Angel as I take THAT JOB quite seriously, you know? So, if you are tapped to be a Squidoo Squid Angel, wear those wings proudly as you perform your heavenly duties on earth. Show some humility too; be true to yourself. Be the best that you can be.

Do YOU Believe in Angels?
There are all kinds of angels who impact our daily lives! So which of these angels do YOU believe in?
  1. Heavenly angels
  2. Guardian angels
  3. Squid angels
  4. Dark angels
  5. My significant other is an angel
  6. None of the above
Angel Blessings to YOU!

What a remarkably reflective and inspiring angel! This angel monument pretty accurately captures my feelings as I reflect on what all it has meant to be a Squid Angel. Although I have retired my angel wings, I hope to be returning soon. In the meantime, be on the look out for other Squid Angels who may grace your lens(es) with their special blessings of angel dust!

Jaguar Julie Squid Angel Wordle

Rather an interesting way of looking at Squid Angels ... up close and personal you know. Blessings to YOU, my dear!~ Jaguar Julie Squid Angel Wordle

Do You Believe?

We count ourselves blessed when we have been touched by an angel. Angels can exist in heaven and on earth. If you have been touched by an angel, I'd love to hear your story!

What types of Squid Angels WERE there?

special angel with wings

Squid Angels as Hoverers!
  1. To remain floating, suspended, or fluttering in the air: gulls hovering over the waves or angels hovering over Squidoo lenses!
  2. To remain or linger in or near a place: hovering around the speaker’s podium.
  3. To remain in an uncertain state; waver: hovered between anger and remorse.
Squid Angels as Hoverers

As you can probably guess, I go for definition #1! And, being new in my role as a Squid Angel, for my first go-around, I described myself as a ‘hoverer.’ It also comes from my Marketing background and strong need for analytical research. You see, I don’t like to jump to any conclusions but require lots of data and lots of research.

It’s after I acquire plenty of empirical research — look at lots of lenses — that I feel empowered to bless them! No willy nilly, mindless blessings. No tit-for-tat, reciprocal types of blessings. No special group of angels working in a block. Just one solitary squid angel blessing one at a time, worthy lenses.

Here’s such a ‘hovering’ Squid Angel … it’s really ME when I was hard at work as a Squid Angel oh so long ago.

Squid Angels as Buglers!
  1. Music: To sound a bugle.
  2. To give forth a deep, prolonged sound similar to the bay of a hound.
Squid Angels as Buglers

There are some Squid Angels who will announce their visits and their blessings. Alrightee, I will confess that I have sounded the bugle a couple of times, but I must admit that I found some lenses which warranted a bugle blast!

Squid Angels are Humble!!

MOST, Squid Angels are humble! They understand humility. I'm blonde, but I am humble too! Blessings to you, my dear!

I have only included this one definition, but personally like what it says:
  1. Marked by meekness or modesty in behavior, attitude, or spirit; not arrogant or prideful.
Squid Angels are Humble

To have been honored with the responsibility of a Squid Angel, means that these select few members have the powers to bless those lenses which are indeed worthy of blessing.

A Hip Squid Angel

Imagine this fashionable and very hip Squid Angel flying in to bless one of YOUR lenses!
Hip Squid Angel
  1. Yes, we're considering a way to let lensmasters know when their lenses have been blessed or dinged. Right now they don't know unless an Angel tells them. Angels are free to communicate that (or not) in whatever way is most comfortable for them.
  2. Every Squid Angel makes a difference. If one Angel blesses a lens, the lens gets a small boost. If several Angels bless it, the boost jumps to a new tier.
  3. The idea is not to form a jury and drive a traditional consensus. That would be an entirely different program. Instead, the idea is to empower you as individuals.
  4. The Angels group is varied, by design, and I'm betting you'll each browse and bless (or ding) different lenses in a broad range of topics. Then, when diverse opinions from top lensmasters converge naturally in the same place, that's when something really special happens.
  5. Angels are not required to give editorial reviews of lenses that are posted in the Angels forum. But if they'd like to, they can.
  6. Nope, Angels won't ding lenses that are still under construction.
  7. Nope, LensRank doesn't affect your Google traffic or other search engine results.
  8. Yep, Angels are allowed to bless a few (not all!) of their own lenses. Hey, they're working hard for everyone else, they deserve the same perk.
  9. The coolest thing I've heard today is that Angels are doing so much more than blessing lenses... they're also adding those lenses to StumbleUpon, Delicious, rating them, etc.
Some Squid Angel Blessing Buzzwords
  1. Compelling Read
  2. Quality Content
  3. Originality
  4. Uniqueness
  5. Great Story
  6. Great Composition
  7. Zero Spam Index
  8. General Audience

AB+ = Blessings to YOU my dear!

What's that mean? Well, AB+ really IS my blood type, but more importantly it means I've left you an "Angel Blessing" + 5 stars > now a big SquidLike!

JaguarJulie is a Squid Angel Emeritus. I served a third term from 10/13/09-01/03/10. That's a total of 8.3 months of Squid Angel meaningful service oh so long ago. I returned to active Squid Angel duty on 03/05/12 and served approximately a one year term before the Squid Angel program was retired.

My Online Brand of JaguarJulie

jacksonville jaguars original logo

Where did the name 'Jaguar Julie' originate??? Yep, I've been asked that a million times ...Jaguar Julie is an athletic supporter and fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars!

I took on the name of "Jaguar Julie" when the Jacksonville Jaguars first hit town … quite a few years ago, even though it feels like yesterday! That name became the name of my "brand" that has been primarily marketed online.

Several years ago, as a supporter of Mark Brunell, our former quarterback, I sold his NFL, Premium Collection, Limited Treasures collectible bear. When Mark Brunell left town for the Washington Redskins, I later donated hundreds of these collectible bears to his local charity which benefits children.

More About JaguarJulie

In the late 1990s, I took on the persona of JaguarJulie to celebrate the Jaguars coming to town! In 2004, I formed my own company, Jaguar Julie Designs to provide marketing consulting and to continue my online selling with a store on eCrater and iOffer.

Since 2003, I’ve been a BzzAgent and used to be a lot more active bzzing until BzzAgent introduced me to Squidoo in March 2006!  I originally created about 3 dozen lenses when I first joined, and would create one here and there UNTIL I got that wonderful invitation from Megan Casey to "kick it into high gear" and create 100 lenses. Well, I took on that challenge and despite a "hard drive crash" on August 31, 2007, I managed to accomplish the feat of 100 lenses.

In March 2006, I also joined Stylehive where I found that unique outlet to express my passion for fashion. I actively bookmarked over 30,000 fashionable items into the hive, participated in several contests, actually won a couple, and coaxed MANY of my friends, family, and coworkers to join and participate.

IN A NUTSHELL: I’m really into modern and contemporary design and love to spot emerging trends.  I really "dig" indie designers plus name-brand designers. You could say my style and taste is European-chic with a flair for the eclectic. I’m a marketing professional and style fashionista who has garnered some 25 years in Corporate America; most recently as the marketing manager for a fortune 500 Fujifilm company. When I’m not Squidooing, I’m also trying to be productive as the Marketing Director of a start-up pressroom chemicals company!

JaguarJulie Former Squid Angel

JaguarJulie was a Squid Angel for her first term of six months in 2008 and served again with a heavenly group of Squid Angels on Squidoo. JaguarJulie was a Squid Angel Emeritus of 8.3 months of heavenly and meaningful service as a "quiet" Squid Angel until returning to active duty on March 5, 2012. A belief in angels and an appreciation for their spirituality has guided JaguarJulie in her daily life. It is natural that angels would mean so much -- sharing the love with you today! I AM a Squid Angel Who Retired Her Wings or Her Halo. Thanks to Squidoo for granting my wings those few times. It's JaguarJulie Squid Angel : Blessings to YOU and You Too!

I wrote a lot about spirituality and angels. There were Christmas Angels, Touched by an Angel, The Art of Angels and so many more angels above.

squidoo squid angels with wings graphic
I was last honored to be an official Squidoo Squid Angel on March 5, 2012. Previously, I was a Squid Angel from October 13, 2009 and retired in January 2010 to give other Squid Angels an opportunity. This is a role that I take quite seriously and I surely hope that those of you tapped to be Squid Angels recognize that responsibility. You know, my first assignment as a Squid Angel was in March 2008 when I earned my wings as a Squid Angel here at Squidoo. Blessings to YOU, my dear! May you be as blessed as I have been.

I joined Squidoo on March 21, 2006, so it took me two years to earn my wings!

It’s hard to articulate what all being a Squid Angel really means to me. You see, I’m a very spiritual type of person who honestly believes in angels and guardian angels in particular. I’ve been told that I have two guardian angels, my grandmothers, who are usually with me.

2008 Giant Squid of the Year

I am humbled and honored to be the Giant Squid of the Year as voted in the 2008 Giant Squid Awards Competition, sponsored by the Giant Squid Organizers.

Special thanks to all of my supporters who actually voted for me — I sure do appreciate it!

I couldn’t have done it without your support! ;)

I was a member of the Charter Class of Giant Squids 100 Club!

Giant Squids 100 Club
Thank you Squidoo, I was so thrilled! On September 19, 2007, I was honored to hear that I had been chosen to join the Giant Squids, Squidoo’s elite squad of the best and most prolific lensmasters on Squidoo. And, on top of that, I was able to exceed the challenge by creating over 100 lenses and be a member of the Giant Squids 100 Club!!!

I  published well over 850 lenses to my name, have sold a few, and had 6 group lenses. I’ve ‘consulted’ on dozens of lenses for different lensmasters, giving them enhancement tips. Oh, I H-E-A-R-T Squidoo.

Thanks to everyone at Squidoo–you know who you are–and also, thanks to those others who made this possible–God, my family, my tolerant hubby, my coworkers!

P.S. When writing my lenses, I’ve done my best to be “original,” not copying other Squidoo lenses. I’m flattered when I see other lenses popping up that seem rather familiar to my lenses. Thanks all you squidsters!

"Made in" Eastern European Countries

Each of those lenses were jam-packed with interesting items. I have an ancestry that is Eastern European and became quite interested in genealogy a few years ago prior to our vacation to Hungary and Romania. It was that trip that spawned my first "made in" lens of "made in Hungary."

Hungarian Themes

In my food topics, as well as fashion and travel, I wrote a lot about Hungarian themes.

Genealogy-Inspired Topics!

A few surprises ... After my vacation to Hungary and Romania, I felt passionate about taking a closer look at my Eastern European genealogy to learn more about my family's ancestors. In the process, I uncovered some interesting possibilities as to distant relatives!

More Unusual Topics!

What else did I write about? Oh boy! There are a lot of topics when you are talking about over 850 lenses, you know? It was really because of my mom that the Momerisms lens was created. And, how appropriate to celebrate moms today and for Mother's Day! I also did a special lens, Thank You Mom, to thank my mom appropriately.
