What the royal heck is Trochanteric Bursitis? Yes, seriously indeed! Hey you there! Huh? What the heck is Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome you say? Yes, this is exactly what I am asking myself. You see, I finally paid a visit to my orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hakim, at the prodding of my dear old ex-hubby.

The now ex-hubby said, you'd better get that hip of yours checked out so that you are OK for our upcoming vacation in Greece. You know, that is a trip of a lifetime, and I want you to be OK and able to hike the ruins of ancient Greece.

I am walking into the examination room and there I see Dr. Hakim sitting with the gang. "What are YOU doing here?" he asks. "Oh, I couldn't stay away from my favorite doctor!" You know, it helps that you would have a favorite doctor when you are wondering about your hip pain.

Welcome to my journey to conquer my hip joint pain! So you see, I left Dr. Hakim's office with a diagnosis of Trochanteric Bursitis aka Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome. I had never heard of this before, but I did know a bit about bursitis.

Let me tell you more about my journey! This is my personal story of experiencing this painful condition. My story will unfold for you, just as it happens! I will update my story as it goes! You know, I've already been to Dr. Hakim twice! Read all about those visits! Say there! "What the Heck!

The Trochanteric Bursitis Poll

My Initial Diagnosis of Trochanteric Bursitis
Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome - Do you have a pain in your groin?

Ah, when I was being escorted into the examination room, Dr. Hakim's assistant asked me "Do you have a pain in your groin?" I told her well not exactly as it wasn't my groin that had been bothering me. I gestured to the outside of my right hip, pointing at what us women affectionately like to call the "widest part." She shook her head and mumbled something which I think had to do with the greater trochanter portion of my femur.

I sat down in the chair in the corner of the exam room and went about completing the medical questionnaire. It had been a few years since I had last seen Dr. Hakim. You see, he and I went round and round several years ago when he performed a couple of surgeries on my left shoulder to repair a SLAP Tear. That was probably the most painful couple of years, requiring several courses of pain management until I was free of reflex sympathetic dystrophy. A few years later, I returned to Dr. Hakim for surgery to a repair Meniscus Tear of my left knee.

My pain can go from moderate to excruciating when I walk up an incline or up and down some steps. And, when it starts to hurt, it won't quit! I have used a lot of heat wraps and patches like ThermaCare Lower Back & Hip Heat Wraps.

A couple of x-rays were taken of my right hip and then Dr. Hakim came in for the exam. We talked about why I had waited three years or so before coming to see him. He mentioned that it would have been better that I came at the initial onset of the pain symptoms.

Dr. Hakim had me lie on the exam table and began a series of manipulations with my right leg and hip. He checked the length of both my legs to see if my right leg was a different length from my left leg. Glad to know I passed that test! When he pushed my leg and hip up and outwards, I felt discomfort. Then he began pressing on a variety of areas on the outside of my right hip and on the back side of my hip. Yes, Yes, No, YES! Bingo! You have Trochanteric Bursitis aka Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome.

The Initial Treatment for Trochanteric Bursitis
How would you like a cortisone shot in the hip? With the initial diagnosis of Trochanteric Bursitis being made, we next discussed treatment recommendations and options. What impressed me initially, was Dr. Hakim's query of why I had waited so long to seek a diagnosis. "Well, you see, my mom has a bad hip too" I said, "And my aunt had two hip replacements ... I think it runs in the family."

I had waited so long to seek a doctor's care because I was so sure it meant a hip replacement for me! I had NO IDEA that we would be talking about something else; i.e. Trochanteric Bursitis.

OK, so Dr. Hakim began talking about a cortisone injection into my hip; he said that he prepares the injection there in the office and that there would be a slight numbing effect up to say 12 hours and that the shot shouldn't hurt too bad. Well, by that time, his assistant was smiling and shaking her head. "Oh, I know how you are about shots and needles" she said. "Well, you think about it and I'll be back in a few minutes" Dr. Hakim calmly replied.

I got off the exam table, sat in the chair in the corner, wiped my sweaty hands and thought about it. You know, I had convinced myself that I would tough out the shot that day. However, when Dr. Hakim returned to the room, he had already figured I would say NO SHOT. "OK" he said, "I will give you a prescription for the Flector Patch and make an appointment for you to return in 2 weeks and we can give you the cortisone injection then."

Since my shoulder surgery several years earlier, I had purchased a Tens Unit that I was using frequently. I opted to use that Tens Unit on my hip.

Two Weeks Follow Up Doctor Appointment
I returned to see Dr. Hakim on June 24, 2010, two weeks after my initial appointment. We had set up this appointment with the option of canceling if I opted to not want to return. It had been two weeks of wearing the Flector Patch. The doctor's assistant had mentioned that I might want to cut the patch in half to make it go further. That would be a good idea on a patch that costs just about $5.00 each!

Thus far, I have experienced no major improvements to the pain in my right hip after wearing that Flector Patch for two weeks. I didn't have any specific expectations, well other than the fact that the prescription cost almost $300.00 and I thought I'd have something really major to report. You know, less pain or pain-free? Well, I am still wearing the patch and still waiting.

Medishorts Exam Blue Large/xl 50/case

Preparing for the cortisone shot, the doctor's assistant handed me a pair of MediShorts. The label says Item #10001 by Graham Medical Products.

"Oh wow bloomers!" We were laughing about the shorts and asking some personal questions, like "should I take off my underwear?" Ha! Too much information for this article folks. Dr. Hakim came in and asked if I need somebody to hold my hand. Ah ... no thank you doctor. "Have you got a blindfold?" Ha!

Dr. Hakim pressed/poked a couple of spots to elicit a "bingo" or "eureka" from me. He then tore a hole in the shorts, at the side of my right hip, and proceeded to make 4 separate injections from the one needle. He mentioned that I should feel a bit of pressure -- sure sure -- and ouch from the injection.

My Next Doctor Appointment
My next appointment was set for July 16, 2010, a follow-up in three weeks. However, on July 12th, I called and cancelled that appointment although I am experiencing a bit of increased pain. I told Julie, in Dr. Hakim's office, that my finances at the moment didn't support extra expenses which I could control. I hope to reschedule in the near future.

So, today's visit cost $220.00. That included the office visit as an Expanded Prob 99213 = $100.00. The shot was the rest of the charges! Office Procedures of Major Joint/Bursa/Gan = 20610 = $100.00 + Xylocaine J2000 = $5.00 + Cortisone J0810 = $15.00.

Adding a little humor to the equation! Hey Hey Hey! Hello there ... if anything we've learned over all these years of being impacted by age is to have a sense of humor about it all. After all, if you can't smile about it, what's the alternative? Shrivel up and die maybe? I think NOT.

Life has been a spiritual journey for me and I am feeling like I need to express this more these days. I think the end is surely near. My mom has been telling us more and more that she won't be around much longer. I've sat up and taken notice ... you see, me and my mom are pretty much alike ... in many ways! UPDATE!

It was June 2010 when I visited Dr. Hakim in Jacksonville, Florida. Fast forward to today ... it is Friday, May 31, 2019 ... that is nearly NINE years since my diagnosis of Trochanteric Bursitis in my right hip. Let me tell you, but the past year, the pain has escalated to be a daily challenge for me. I would say, at this point, it feels like Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome as it feels like it has radiated down from the outside of my right hip. When I am out in my gardens, I need to be careful not to rotate on my right hip or my leg will give out. I now know that this daily pain and limitations are impacting me greatly. I will be visiting my primary care physician soon and see what my course of treatment might be at this point!

Playtex HandSaver Gloves

Playtex HandSaver Gloves are my favorite household accessory! I literally love Playtex HandSaver Gloves ... they are undoubtedly my most important "gadget" that I use when cleaning my house. Who knew that a pair of rubber gloves could become your most important tool when doing household chores? For me, my hands are one of my best assets and it is important that I protect them. I not only use my hands every day to clean up around the house, but to also work online ... banging the keys on that computer keyboard, you know?

I just wore them to move a large painted turtle from my sunflower garden.

NATURAL LATEX AND NEOPRENE!
These handsaver gloves are made of natural rubber latex and neoprene. After working in the medical products industry, I learned that some gloves are latex-free as some people can have allergies to rubber latex. I personally never experienced such an allergy thankfully. Did you know that you can find neoprene in scuba diving apparel and even in lunch bags ... I know a lot about those as I wrote the article, Neoprene Lunch Totes.

A VARIETY OF COLORS!
You can find these in several colors ... yellow, pink, blue, red. I've always favored the color yellow; so that's what I always buy!

SIZE MATTERS!
I used to buy a size medium and then one day I bought the large size. You know, I never thought I had big hands, but I do have longer fingers. The size large fits me well.

I let them air dry on the garbage can in the garage.

LONGER DESIGN!
They are designed to extend well past your wrist, with an overall length of 10-1/2 inches. That longer design along with the flared cuff really helps to keep your hands drier.

CARE AND USAGE!
It makes a lot of sense that after each use, you should use soap and water to wash the outside of the gloves. However, for me, I also wash the inside of the gloves and hang them up to let the liquids run out of the inside. Turning them inside out will help and then I make sure they air dry. I saw a note that said not to put these in the dishwasher? I'd never thought of doing that ... but it would be too hot and these would melt! I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to put these in the washing machine either unless your put them into a net bag and washed with cool or warm water.

SPECIAL APPLICATIONS!
#1 Project: I found that wearing a pair worked perfectly when I did a couple of large outside garden projects. I did two side yard gardens of Mexican Petunias ... and then I tackled the entire side yard on the Eastside of my house. Digging up the grass and weeds, I wore these gloves! Normal gloves will get extremely dirty. Because of the longer design, it kept a lot more of the dirt out of the gloves. One thing I did notice when wearing these during that job ... my hands were sweating and I had to take them off once in a while to empty out the sweat! Hey, that's OK ... it is YOUR sweat or MINE after all.

#2 Project: I was using a bucket of warm water with bleach to hand wash the vinyl siding on my house! It was a 3 day project; which meant lots of bleach that could hurt the skin on my hands. Honestly? These gloves were a lifesaver.

La Tour Eiffel - The Eiffel Tower

Bonjour to La Tour Eiffel : Hello to The Eiffel Tower that you will find in Paris -- the fabulous iron tower built on the Champ de Mars beside the River Seine in Paris. It is the tallest structure in Paris and among the most recognized symbols of France. In French, it is referred to as La Tour Eiffel.

La Tour Eiffel is also the name of a line of designer handbags which most certainly must have been inspired by the Eiffel Tower.

It is the inspiring Eiffel Tower shape which actually appears on the insignia of this line. The rich brown coloring and tan accents of this brand reminds me and many other fashion-conscious admirers of the Louis Vuitton styling.

How to clean & maintain your La Tour Eiffel handbag

As with any fine handbag, it is recommended that you always store it in its dustcover--a soft fabric bag--when not in use. Store it in a dry and not warm location. I keep mine in the dustcovers on the upper shelves of my walk-in closet. It's very dry and not hot.

To clean, keep in mind that the La Tour Eiffel brand is usually of mixed composition: fabric and leather or fine vinyl and leather. To clean the leather, carefully apply Leather Therapy -- it is available in a variety of types: water repellant, wash, restorer & conditioner, leather finisher. I've used the wash and restore & conditioner on my fine leather handbags and achieved excellent results.

Grays Anatomy

Are you familiar with Gray's Anatomy? It probably inspired Grey's Anatomy! Gray's Anatomy? No, it's not Grey's Anatomy, the TV series, but actually THE English-language human anatomy textbook Gray's Anatomy! IMHO, the television series Grey's Anatomy must surely have been inspired by Gray's Anatomy, the textbook! That's my personal opinion and I'm stickin' to it until I find otherwise. What do you think?

I have written a lot about Health and Medical topics. In another article, I've written, Meniscus Tear, I saw some very cool examples of anatomy drawings from Henry Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body.

What's really cool is that you'll find Gray's drawings throughout the internet as his textbook is widely regarded as a classic work on the subject. The book was first published in 1858 while work on his book was continued by others and on November 24, 2004, the 39th British edition was released.

The first edition of Gray's Anatomy covered 750 pages and contained 363 figures.

Anyone perusing the last 10 incarnations of this vigorous old warhorse of medical literature will note that a significant change came about with the 35th in 1973, when the visual character of the book began a veritable transformation.

Achilles Tendon Ruptured or Torn? Did you know that the Achilles Tendon is the thickest and strongest tendon in the body? Imagine a rupture or a tear!

Well, I sure didn't know that the Achilles Tendon, my Achilles Tendon, is the thickest and strongest tendon in the body ... well, not until I began my research into this tendon. And, you could really fool me about it being the strongest! You see, I was doing some chores around the house ... specifically standing on my tippy toes and doing a lot of reaching to wipe the huge bathroom mirror over the his and hers sinks.

As I reached for the very top of the mirror, I HEARD and FELT a loud snap in the back of my left ankle! It was the strangest sound; rather 'reedy.' "Oh no! I can't believe I tore my Achilles Tendon!" Can you believe that? "Oh no!" I thought, "I'm just recovering from surgery for excision of a Morton's Neuroma in my right foot!" I surely don't need to have a torn Achilles Tendon in my other foot! You know?

P.S. We opted today to feature a creative and artsy picture of a pair of ankles with a cute bunny. You see, there isn't much to see on the outside of one's ankle [like mine] to show you a torn Achilles Tendon. It's the surgery that gets pretty graphic. We've not yet had surgery. Just been wearing the boot off and on.

Oh My to a Torn Achilles Tendon!
You know, it is always something!

It was just nine months after I had Morton's Neuroma surgery on my right foot that my left torn Achiles Tendon continued to be problematic. I have battled the issues with the chronic tears to my Achilles Tendon for more than a few years. It really doesn't seem that I will ever be a runner!

In 2011, I had two additional foot surgeries; starting with a bunionectomy of the right foot first. That surgery went fairly well. In a little over 90 days from that surgery, I had bunionectomy of my left foot. That was a bit more challenging for me in that I got a screw in the joint. Since the surgery, we tried to remove the screw without any luck. I am still careful with my recovering torn Achilles Tendon and sure hope that I don't need MORE surgery!

In mid December 2007
I had surgery to excise a Morton's Neuroma! When it rains, it pours ... I've also had another MRI of the other foot to rule-out another Morton's Neuroma!

Doctors appointment: February 21, 2008
Release: 8 weeks post-of Morton's Neuroma excision. I had looked forward to this appointment for the past 4 weeks. However, in the meantime, I experienced difficulty with my left foot. I was having 2 separate problems … the classic symptoms of ANOTHER Morton’s Neuroma in my other foot AND the possibility of a torn Achilles tendon!

First, I was officially released being 8 weeks post-op for surgery to excise the Morton’s Neuroma in my right foot. As I’m a multi-tasker ;-), I used my visit to discuss the problems with my left foot. I had mentioned at my prior visit that I was feeling symptoms in my left foot too for a Morton’s Neuroma!

The doctor felt my ankle and mentioned that my Achilles tendon felt thin. He performed a number of manipulations and pressed on various parts of my ankle, asking did it bruise or swell. 3 x-rays of my left foot were taken and I left waiting to be scheduled for an MRI!

MRI: February 22, 2008
Wow ... scheduled the very next day! I was scheduled very quickly for an MRI of my left foot and ankle … pretty amazing that they got me in for the very next day. I had to wait about 1-1/2 hours for my MRI as it seems someone before me either moved during their MRI or the lady in front of me was a last minute schedule.

Another interesting thing I noted is that I’ll probably be billed as 2 separate MRIs … one for the ankle [Achilles Tendon] and the other for the foot [Morton's Neuroma] !!

Doctors appointment: February 28, 2008
MRI Results are in ... There is a chronic partial tear of the Achilles tendon. I have been ordered to begin wearing a Royce Medical orthopedic boot immediately for the next 4 weeks. Follow-up appointment was scheduled for 3 weeks since my doctor is vacationing on the 4th week!

Doctors appointment: April 9, 2008

After 6 weeks in the Royce boot! Well, today was D-day in finding out my progress wearing the Royce boot for approximately 6 weeks. My Achilles tendon definitely is improved to the point that my doctor opts to release me.

My instructions are to wear shoes with a bit of a heel — perhaps 2 to 2-1/2″ heels — rather than flats like I have been wearing. He tells me to be particularly careful of steps, going up and coming down, along with jumping. I haven’t got any plans for that type of exercise, so I should be OK.

However! We are taking a wait and see attitude on my Mortons Neuroma as to whether surgery WILL be scheduled. He said, “Call me when you decide you need it!”

Oh No! Surgery?
The prospect of surgery to repair a torn Achilles Tendon is scary when I see the pictures and videos!

Fast forward to today -- I am still plagued by my Achilles Tendon! I sure could use the morale support of my readers as I tackle the next phase of my foot care ... hopefully I won't need surgery to repair the Achilles tendon!
