What makes a designer bag one of the best? There are a lot of elements that go into the mix … you could say it’s rather like a good package. There’s the designer and his reputation along with good design and celebrity exposure. Excellent leather and exotic materials coupled with the finest craftsmanship are important. I personally like the extras from embossed hardware to chain link straps, fringe, flaps, sometimes a pom-pom or two … you know the bells and whistles without overdoing it. This past season the roomy, over-sized satchel has been hot along with patent leather! As you can see, there are a lot of factors that make a bag one of the best. It’s rather like magic!

Over the years since I first created this page, I have watched the designers change with their designs. I’ve found that the styles may change a bit, but the designers are still producing classy products. As I’ve kept on top of the best, I have actually removed a designer or two from my list and added perhaps one or two.

• Balenciaga is a fashion house founded by Cristobal Balenciaga, a Spanish designer. He introduced couture shapes to the women's world and was referred to as "the master of us all" by Christian Dior.
